Shufu Reaps Gold, Silver at Pan Am Judo Championships in Havana

Congratulations to the USA national kata judo team for their accomplishments at the Pan Am Judo Championships in Havana Cuba on April 28, 2016. They were honored with 3 gold medals and 3 silver medals.


Robert Gouthro and Lisa Capriotti won gold in Nage no Kata mixed and Kime no Kata mixed. Diane Tamai Jackson and Karl Tamai won gold in Ju no Kata mixed and silver in Katame no Kata mixed. Doug and Douglas Newcomer (father and son) won silver in men’s Katame no Kata and Kime no Kata.  Doug Tono and Andrezej Dajnowski won fourth in Kodokan Goshin Jutsu.


Thank you for all of your hard work and effort to get there. You make all of us proud.  Thank you to the operations team that ran the kata portion of the event…  Barbara Anderson, Karen Whilden, Carla Martin and Frances Glaze. Also special thanks to Ms. Takeuchi (Chair of PJC kata committee), Barb Shimizu (PJC kata committee secretary) and Claudia Smith (IJF kata judge).

Coach Certification

Heads Up concussion training, through the CDC’s website, is a requirement for all members of your USJF registered club who function as teachers at any time. Please advise all of your instructors and assistant instructors of this requirement. The training can be accessed at:

Hilaire Notewo Seeking Donations for Judo Programs in the Ivory Coast, Needs Gis and Equipment

Longtime Shufu Judo member Hilaire Notewo is planning to relocate to Côte D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Africa in late November/December. He will be supporting judo programs, but equipment (esp. judo uniforms) are difficult to come by.  Hilaire is looking for gently used judo gis and other equipment.  Hilaire will also be visiting and donating goods to orphanages.  Should you have gently used shoes, clothes for teenagers, youths, and toddlers, kindly make them available to Hilaire.
