George Kerr, Judan

George Kerr, Judan

Maurice Allan, MBE, Sensei of Sport Judo and who holds the judo rank of Hachican (8th Degree Black Belt), wishes to bring a special publication to the attention of the members of Shufu Yudanshakai.

My Journey to the 10th Dan is the story of George Kerr, the only living Judan outside of Japan, and who was Sensei Allan’s teacher.  More than an autobiography, it is the story of  a man who has dedicated his life to judo and used the principles of the sport to be successful in his life of nearly 80 years.

Kerr studied in Japan under Daigo, Osawa, and Inokuma, and won the first ever British Open Judo Championships and was European champion .  He later coached Peter Seisenbacher to two consecutive Olympic Gold Medals, in 1984 and 1988.

He went on to be named as one of the inaugural members of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame, was president of the British Judo Association, and was the recipient of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, from Japan.  He was appointed Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2011.
