The Embassy of Japan invited Hui-O-Judo Beltsville to provide a judo demonstration as part of an annual event celebrated during International Cultural Awareness Month.
This popular celebration, which features embassy open houses and cultural performances across Washington, D.C., regularly draws a crowd of thousands of visitors who toured the embassy grounds and viewed exhibits on technology, Ikebana, and the tea ceremony.
Led by Sensei Diane Tamai Jackson and supported by Shufu Judo judoka—including Brian Lopez, R. Wayne Brown, Andrew Schwarzkopf, Jen Evans, and Alex Jacobson—the hour long demonstration took place in the courtyard of the Ambassador’s old residence.
Attendees faced a 90-minute wait to enter the Embassy so the demonstration provided entertainment, appearing ahead of performances of koto, karate, and taiko as they progressed through the courtyard.
The presentation was highly interactive, featuring throwing examples, ju-no-kata, uchi-komi, and a grand finale where Senseis Brian and Alex performed zempo kaiten over one, two, three and finally four people!
The crowd engagement was exceptional. Many children and adults—ranging from newcomers to veterans returning after decades away from the sport joined us on the mat to receive individual instruction on how to fall safely and the opportunity to complete a throw. The well-run event was further highlighted by a brief appearance from the Ambassador himself.
A special thank you to Sensei Brian who brought the mats from Hui-O.
