Sensei James Takemori, 1926 – 2015

Sensei James Takemori passed away this morning after a brief illness.

One of the true icons of judo in the United States, American-born Sensei Takemori served in World War II in the 442nd infantry.  He was one of the founders of Shufu Yudanshakai and the Judo Black Belt Association (JBBF), which later became the United States Judo Federation (USJF).

He led Shufu for many years as Chairman of the Board of Examiners and President.  He was the current Chairman of the USJF Promotions Committee, an IJF-A (International) Referee, developed an Olympic Bronze medalist, scores of nationally ranked competitors, and was acknowledged as a highly successful coach and teacher, based at the Washington (D.C.) Judo Club.  He held the judo rank of Kudan (ninth degree black belt).

In 2004 the Emperor of Japan awarded Takemori the Order of the Rising Sun Gold and Silver Rays for his work in fostering mutual understanding and friendship between the USA and Japan.
