Faye Allen Kata Tournament and Kata Judges Clinic 2019

The Faye Allen Memorial Kata Tournament has been a Shufu Yudanshakai tradition for many years. On September 21st, DC Judo will host the 2019 event in Washington DC at the Edgewood Arts Center 3615 8th St NE.  The USJF sanction is #19-09-15.

This year we will depart from our traditional instructional focus. The clinic this year will be for Kata Judging. This event is an opportunity for those interested in learning to judge kata, improving their kata judging skills, or for kata competitors looking to better understand what judges look for and how they can improve their competition scores. Shufu Yuidanshakai is blessed with a strong kata community and a rich group of high level competitors and high level judges. Come join us to learn and grow your kata expertise.

Saturday  begins with check in at 8:30 AM, warm up at 9:00, and competition starting at 9:30 AM. Clinic will immediately follow competition. Competitors are encouraged to stay for the judging clinic either to improve their judging skills or to give the judges some extra experience. Competitors this is your big chance to see how to improve your scores!

We welcome judoka of all ages and ranks as well as all levels of kata experience. Registration is by participant and once registered you can complete in multiple teams for the same registration fee.  USJF, USJA, or USA Judo membership is required. You must show a valid membership card on site.

Competition will take place in the following Judo kata:

  •     Nage No Kata

  •     Katame No Kata

  •     Ju No Kata

  •     Goshin Jutsu

  •     Kime no Kata

Please join us in the Nation’s Capital for a day of competition and learning. This year’s venue is the Edgewood Arts Center dance/performance space in the Brookland Arts District.

See you on the mat,

Hilaire Notewo Seeking Donations for Judo Programs in the Ivory Coast, Needs Gis and Equipment

Longtime Shufu Judo member Hilaire Notewo is planning to relocate to Côte D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Africa in late November/December. He will be supporting judo programs, but equipment (esp. judo uniforms) are difficult to come by.  Hilaire is looking for gently used judo gis and other equipment.  Hilaire will also be visiting and donating goods to orphanages.  Should you have gently used shoes, clothes for teenagers, youths, and toddlers, kindly make them available to Hilaire.

If you would like to donate to this effort, you can send your donation to the following address:
